Dishing the Dirt - July 2026

Hello my friends! Can you believe that it is July? Summer is officially here!
Spring was beautiful, busy, and DRY! Kent County is experiencing a significant drought, having one of the driest springs in over a century. It is amazing to see the fragile little sprouts push their way out of the soil and grow in spite of the hot, dry conditions. It is not easy and yet they do it. The poor things look a little rough sometimes, particularly in the middle of the day when the sun is shining its brightest. Yet they persevere. I am so happy to report that with a grant from The MidShore Foundation, Sandy’s Garden has just finished laying an irrigation system! It is a slow-release drip irrigation system, which will enable the plants to get water slowly and steadily- no runoff and no evaporation. The plants looked happier and healthier within hours of the installation. It’s amazing how well they were doing in the drought conditions- imagine how much more productive they will be now that their nutritional needs are being met. Sounds a lot like our neighbors who face food insecurity. So often, we don’t realize that someone is struggling- they still go to work and school, they are still productive. Just like our plants, can you imagine how much happier and healthier they would be if they too had proper nutrition? Healthy food is such an easy solution to some real health and behavioral problems. It’s our continued goal to help meet the need that exists.

Happy Summer my friends! Thank you for your support!
With love and gratitude,
Sandy
